Supermarket stores not only supply us with our daily food but are also in business to make money - a lot of money. They use certain tricks and techniques to encourage the shopper to spend more. In times of a recession, the shopper needs to learn how to avoid over spending and thus not falling for the tricks of the supermarket stores.
<b>Don't go unless you really need to</b> If you simply need some milk or bread, simply go to your nearest small store. It's a proven fact that if you go to a large supermarket store you are guaranteed to come back with far more than you went in for.
<b>Eat before you shop</b> Again, it's a proven fact that going shopping on an empty stomach will encourage you to buy far more than what you intended. Always shop on a full stomach.
<b>Plan your future meals before you shop</b> Put together a meal plan for the week. By doing so will get the correct combination of ingredients so you won't end up with surplus food such as a bag of vegetables that you don't know what to do with. Don't throw away food ' you are throwing money in the trash.
<b>Compile a shopping list </b> It kind of sounds obvious, but put yourself together a shopping list before your go out to the shop. It will help you only buy what you actually need. This is certainly a good idea if you have planned your meals as suggested above.
<b>Beware of special offers</b> A lot of stores offer buy-one-get-one-free on products but do you know the regular price of the item before the offer started? Do you really need to extra quantity ' or are you just buying it because of the offer? The wasted food could end up in the trash if you can't manage to eat it all.
<b>Don't get taken in by the glitzy displays</b> Supermarket stores use physiological tricks to make us buy more and this includes having glamorous displays. It costs them a lot of money for these displays ' but they know they are worth it because they make more money from the customer. Look around your store, you will notice that the latest 'new' products are specific at eye level ' so you can spot them first. These are exactly the products the supermarket wants to sell you ' maybe they are making a better mark up on these items? Open your eyes and don't buy the first thing you see. Always make a point of looking on both the upper shelves and lower shelves as you will often find the exact product that fore fills your needs ' for a lot cheaper.
