Clarke Quay, A Pedestrian Mall
Clarke Quay is situated inside the Singapore River Planning Area and is found upstream from Boat Quay and the entrance of the Singapore River. Clarke Quay was named after the second Governor of Singapore and Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Andrew Clarke, who presided at his post from 1873 to 1875. The Governor played a fundamental role in making Singapore the primary port for the Malay States of Sungei Ujong, Selango and Perak.
The road that runs along Clarke Quay is called by the same name; the road has now been changed to a car free zone. Clarke Street used to lie next to Clarke Quay and was initially called West Street and East Street. These streets were in the north of Kampong Malacca, yet they were brought to one street and called Clarke Street in 1896. Now Clarke Street is also a car free zone like Clarke Quay.
The Clarke Quay area now has numerous restaurants, nightclubs and some five renovated warehouses. Moored Chinese junks also called tongkangs have been renovated to serve as restaurants and pubs that float on the river. The Ministry of Sound also has its presence there. Singapore's preliminary Permanent Illusion Show has started in The Arena and features, 'Magic Babe' Ning and J C Sum. There is also the G-Max reverse bungee; this is the first of its kind in Singapore.
While going to Singapore one will have to look for some Singapore accommodation. A Singapore hotel accommodation would be the best place to look for accommodation. A Singapore hotel would be ideal in that it would provide the traveler with numerous facilities along with the accommodation.
